公有领域

出生入死。
生之徒,十有三;死之徒,十有三;人之生,動之死地,亦十有三。夫何故?以其生生之厚。蓋聞善攝生者,陸行不遇兕虎,入軍不被甲兵;兕無所投其角,虎無所措其爪,兵無所容其刃。夫何故?以其無死地。

出生地,入死地。
十有三,猶云十分有三分,取其生道,全生之極,十分有三耳。取死之道,全死之極,亦十分有三耳。而民生生之厚,更之無生之地焉,善攝生者無以生為 生,故無死地也。器之害者,莫甚乎兵戈,獸之害者,莫甚乎兕虎,而令兵戈無所容其鋒刃,虎兕無所措其爪角,斯誠不以欲累其身者也,何死地之有乎。夫蚖蟺以 淵為淺,而鑿穴其中,鷹鸇以山為卑,而增巢其上,矰繳不能及,網罟不能到,可謂處於無死地矣,然而卒以甘餌,乃入於無生之地,豈非生生之厚乎,故物茍不以 求離其本,不以欲渝其真,雖入軍而不害,陸行而不可犯也,赤子之可則而貴信矣。

出生,謂情欲出五內,魂靜魄定,故生。入死,謂情欲入於胸臆,精勞神惑,故死。
言生死之類各有十三,謂九竅四關也。其生也目不妄視,耳不妄聽,鼻不妄香臭,口不妄言味,手不妄持,足不妄行,精神不妄施。其死也反是也。
人知求生,動作反之十三死也。
問何故動之死地也。
所以動之死地者,以其求生活之事太厚,違道忤天,妄行失紀。
攝,養也。
自然遠離,害不干也。
不好戰以殺人。
養生之人,兕虎無由傷,兵刃無從加之也。
問兕虎兵甲何故不加害之。
以其不犯十三之死地也。言神明營護之,此物不敢害。

Men come forth and live; they enter (again) and die. Of every ten three are ministers of life (to themselves); and three
are ministers of death.
There are also three in every ten whose aim is to live, but whose
movements tend to the land (or place) of death. And for what reason?
Because of their excessive endeavours to perpetuate life.
But I have heard that he who is skilful in managing the life
entrusted to him for a time travels on the land without having to shun
rhinoceros or tiger, and enters a host without having to avoid buff
coat or sharp weapon. The rhinoceros finds no place in him into which
to thrust its horn, nor the tiger a place in which to fix its claws,
nor the weapon a place to admit its point. And for what reason?
Because there is in him no place of death.
